Microsoft Image Composite Editor is a nice-looking and efficient photo stitching utility that creates seamless panoramas from a set of overlapping images. The entire process is automatic and extremely simple, from the selection of the set of files to the cropping of the recreated panorama. The resulting image can be then saved as a JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PNG, or a multiresolution tiled file.
You can simply drag and drop the entire sequence of photographs into the program’s main interface and see it work. In seconds, without further intervention on your side, it will show you the entire panorama. Using high-quality algorithms, the program sorts, rotates, and places the various images in just the right places to produce a seamless and breathtaking panorama. Unlike similar stitching tools, Image Composite Editor is capable of creating panoramas out of any grid of images representing the same scene. It detects all overlapping elements automatically – both vertically and horizontally – and stitches the various shots in a perfect grid or sequence. You can then tell the program to trim all the edges of the resulting panorama for you, or you can do it manually if you wish.
The program does not offer any editing functionality other than the stitching engine itself, but far from being a simple gluer, this utility has been designed to offer professional results in a wide array of sizes. These panoramas can then be printed professional to create large murals, or viewed on the net using sites like Microsoft’s Photosynth for 360º animated panoramas, Deep Zoom, and HD View.
